Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born October 7, 1931 in Klerksdorp, South Africa. He is a South African Anglican Archbishop who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.
Activist and major figure in the struggle against apartheid, he is the author of an Ubuntu theology of reconciliation. He is the first black Anglican archbishop of Cape Town.
He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. In 1995, he became chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, responsible for shedding light on the crimes and political atrocities committed during apartheid. After 3 years of investigations and thousands of hearings, he released the conclusions of the Commission in 1998 which participated in South African reconciliation. He is Grand Cross of the Order of Good Hope (South Africa) and has received national decorations from 7 other countries (Germany, the United States, France, Jamaica, Panama, the Netherlands and United Kingdom).
