Dr Kit Vaughan and the ACESCO, a machine for early and effective detection of breast cancer.

Christopher L. ‘Kit’ Vaughan was born on April 21st, 1953. He is Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Engineering in the Department of Human Biology at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

He created ACESCO, a machine for early and effective detection of breast cancer.

The machine, which works by radiography, performs a full-field digital mammography and automated breast ultrasound scans. As a result, we get a simultaneous acquisition of a series of images of both breasts.

ACESCO has already been successfully tested on nearly 120 South African women and was awarded the 2016 Africa Innovation Prize.
