The great migration sees two million animals make a loop of more than 3,000 km each year in search of better pastures.
1.7 million wildebeest, 400,000 gazelles, 300,000 zebras migrate from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya from July to October. It is a unique phenomenon, which represents the last great animal migration in the world.
The crossing of the Mara river is the strongest and most dramatic spectacle of their migration where the animals pile up on the banks, finally throw themselves into the water at the risk of being caught by the crocodiles waiting for them.
About 250,000 wildebeest and 30,000 zebras are killed each year due to predation by carnivores, but also from thirst, hunger and exhaustion.
